About 10 years ago, Corey Ellis and Alida Burke were in Iqaluit when the harsh conditions prompted them to reflect about food quality. So they designed a greenhouse to grow food even in harsh Arctic conditions, and created Growcer.

Empire to acquire Montreal’s Mayrand Food Group

Nova Scotia-based Empire, the company that owns Sobeys, has purchased Mayrand Food Group, a Quebec-based grocery operator with four stores in the Montreal area. In 2021, it purchased a stake in Toronto-based Longo’s. In 2018, it bought Ottawa-based Farm Boy.

CHG buys tortilla maker Les Aliments Mejicano

CH Guenther & Son has bought Montreal flour-tortilla producer Les Aliments Mejicano, which is led by brothers Philippe and Pascal Gadoua. The business has operated for around 30 years and supplies tortillas to foodservice and retail customers.
